Our New Kroha Layette Building

The Christ Child Society of Detroit's (CCSD's) dream of having a building devoted to its Layette Program has finally been fulfilled through the generosity of several donors, among them the generous Kroha and Day families.

Members meet each month at the building, located on Crooks in Clawson, MI, to assemble layettes, which consist of a crib blanket, a baby bottle, diapers, baby clothes, "Goodnight Moon" book, receiving blankets, a hooded towel, washcloth, bib, and a pacifier. Most of the crib blankets and many of the bibs are lovingly handmade by dedicated CCSD members and friends, as well as community groups such as the senior citizens at the Fox Manor nursing home and many Girl Scout and Brownie troops.

This year CCSD will assemble and distribute over 1200 layettes to 26 local agencies serving needy area families. That is nearly double the amount made in 1999, underscoring the tremendous need for such a service in our community.

For years the layettes were put together at the Christ Child House (CCH) in Detroit, a home for 28 abused and neglected boys that is owned and operated by CCSD. The Society has long been in need of a larger space dedicated to the Layette Program.

CCSD also uses the space for meetings and to store materials for their Clothe-a-Child project, which provides school clothes to underpriveledged children in the Pontiac area.

The building was formally dedicated on June 21, 2004. Our Spiritual Advisor, Monsignor John Zenz, blessed the facility, and plaques honoring the building's benefactors were unveiled and are now proudly and gratefully on display there.
